Lawmakers and medical cannabis advocates met at mercer university to discuss expanding the current medical cannabis policy for more Georgians to have access.
Representative Mark Newton says the purpose of the study committee is to make careful decisions when it comes to the medical cannabis program, despite it being around for a decade.
"We need time to study more in depth before we make policy or before we rush some policy to Georgia. We've had medical cannabis legal in Georgia since 2015 so we want to make sure we're careful in the way we allow that", said Newton. Representative Robert Dickey says they have seen how it benefits those in need--but progress is still slow with expanding policy.
"Very little medical work has been done on it due to it being illegal prior so I just think its got a lot of opportunity to help some patients and we're just trying to facilitate that", said Dickey.
