US (MI): Benton Township to get second cannabis business

Benton Township is getting its second marijuana-related business, just weeks after the board of trustees approved a permit for a marijuana retailer on Pipestone Road.

At this week's meeting of the Benton Township Board of Trustees, the board approved the site plan and a special use permit for a marijuana processing facility at 2077 Yore Avenue. Township building official Loyall Bennett told us applicant Michael Brunson is seeking to open the facility where marijuana grown elsewhere will be treated with oils so it can be sold at retail shops. There will be no marijuana grown at the facility, and it cannot be sold there.

Benton Township Supervisor Cathy Yates tells us marijuana businesses have been coming in slowly since the township opted to allow them a few years ago.

"The other one is a sale, so we have one of each now," Yates said. "So I think we're probably like stagnant and equal, because really the marijuana business is not as people thought it would be. It has really slowed itself down. So I don't think we're going to many more people right away. I think they want to see how it goes."
