Rabobank: Positive sentiment for greenhouse investments

A Rabobank survey among suppliers to the global greenhouse sector reveals a positive sentiment for further investments. Multiple global trends are influencing the greenhouse industry. Consolidation among growers is accelerating in countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, and the US. Labor scarcity is driving increased attention to automation. Regulatory pressures and customer demands are prompting greater focus on the environmental footprint of fresh produce. In addition, climate change presents significant challenges for greenhouse growers.

Regionally, greenhouse area is expanding in Canada and parts of the US. In Europe, there is a noticeable shift toward sourcing more fruits and vegetables from Morocco, impacting Spain's market share in the European market. The situation in the Netherlands and Belgium remains relatively stable, but high energy consumption and energy prices continue to pose challenges. Meanwhile, Eastern Europe has opportunities to expand and upgrade greenhouse production. Finally, the expansion of protected cropping in Australia is expected to continue, but the growth of high-tech greenhouses faces challenges.
