US (AL): MMJ license case heads to Court of Civil Appeals

The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission's efforts to issue licenses have been riddled with lawsuits and allegations of unfairness. The latest development? The Alabama Court of Civil Appeals has agreed to hear oral arguments on the matter.

Specifically, the court will address the ongoing dispute between the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission and several companies that applied for licenses. Critics claim the process lacked transparency and fairness—allegations the commission denies. Across the state, frustration is growing over delays in access to medical cannabis.

The oral arguments are scheduled for February 11. Companies have been competing for licenses to grow, process, and sell medical cannabis in Alabama for years. However, these disputes have delayed the program's timeline, frustrating patients who have been awaiting access since medical cannabis was legalized in 2021.

Attorneys for some of the companies involved argue that the court's decision could set a precedent for how state agencies handle licensing disputes in the future. Until then, the program's launch remains uncertain.
