A bill pre-filed at the state house would, if passed, make medical marijuana legal across South Carolina. Some form of medical cannabis is legal in 38 states.
The bill, also known as the South Carolina Compassionate Care Act, is no stranger to the state Legislature.
State Senator Tom Davis said he hopes the state will be the next state to legalize THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol – the psychoactive compound in cannabis. Margaret Richardson suffers with trigeminal neuralgia, or chronic facial pain. Five years ago, Richardson spoke in front of state lawmakers in favor of THC legalization.
"When the pain wins, you land on the floor and scream out like an animal," she said. "Medical cannabis is anti-inflammatory, so my condition is neurological, instead of the grim side effects associated with opioids, I'm able to take something that actually stops the pain."
