US (KY): License applications open for medical patients in Bluegrass state

Kentucky's medical cannabis program is less than a month from launch, but starting now prospective patients can take the first step to get their paperwork ready for an official medical card.

"All right. What do you need from me?" Karyn Czar, a reporter at WUKY, asked at her certification appointment on Wednesday. Czar is one of many thousands of Kentuckians navigating the process to obtain a medical cannabis card when the program officially launches next year.

When Gov. Andy Beshear signed an executive order two years ago for medical patients, she began making the regular trek just for this cream to help soothe the pain, first to Indiana, then to Ohio, when voters approved cannabis for recreational use.

"Illinois was a four-hour drive; four hours there, four hours back. And then Ohio, you know, an hour, ten or so, and then back. So, I wanted to come see you so that I can be ready to go on January 1st, so I can just get the product at the dispensaries here," Czar said.
