US: $10M in renovations for Minnesota company

A city with deep historical connections to the Green Giant brand could soon be home to a new type of green industry, as entrepreneurs hope to open a cannabis-growing facility in 2025.

The Minnesota Valley Cannabis Company is ready to begin $10 million in renovations within a former Green Giant building at 1001 N. Fourth St. once it secures licensing from the state, according to founder Chris McPhillips. The 48,000-square-foot building would be a site for growing, packaging, and distributing cannabis products to retailers statewide, he said.

"We invested in this in the hopes it would put us in a position to be successful, and we think we're certainly there," he said. "There's not many burgeoning industries that come onto the scene like this."

Minnesota legalized adult recreational cannabis use in 2023. Growing your own marijuana and giving away quantities up to a certain point is legal, but the rollout of a retail marketplace and the licensing needed for it remains ongoing.
