US (MA): Test labs say that more regulation is needed

Several independent laboratories that test cannabis products are calling for more state regulation, saying the current environment encourages dishonesty among testing companies and leads to the approval of sub-par products for dispensary shelves.

The Cannabis Control Commission held a public hearing earlier this month for independent lab representatives and residents after one lab operator told lawmakers in October that the CCC's licensing structure incentivizes facilities that return favorable testing results, such as those that indicate more potent THC content.

"There's a great deal of discussion and required work to be done, and we're asking you to allow us to help," Corey Aldoupolis, a laboratory director at ATOZ Labs in Hopkinton, told CCC members at the Nov. 7 meeting. "We should play an active role in shaping regulations that can drive real progress."

Aldoupolis spoke on behalf of 12 testing labs that meet regularly to discuss industry issues. They called for monthly meetings between the labs and the CCC, as well as scientific input and advance notice on regulatory policies.
