US (SD): "I look at cannabis as a way to diversify the family farm"

Dalton Grimmius operates a row crop farming operation with his family in Brandon, South Dakota, but he raises more than just corn and soybeans. When looking for a way to add something new to the operation, he went a very untraditional route.

"I look at cannabis as a way to diversify the family farm. Growing a plant is growing a plant," said Grimmius, CEO of Dakota Herb. "I had been a consumer. I had been exposed to cannabis throughout my life and knew the powers of the plant and thought I would be the right fit to kind of interpret cannabis for South Dakota."

Currently, only cannabis for medical consumption is legal in the state. Both South Dakota and North Dakota voters rejected ballot measures on Nov. 5 that would have legalized recreational marijuana. Grimmius said the acre need is small to produce the quantity of demand in South Dakota.

"Maybe if a kid wants to stay on the family farm and maybe expand a little bit, it gives an option without going and competing for ground with your neighbors," he said.
