US (NJ): Sparta council votes yes to introduce cannabis businesses to township

The township council voted to introduce three ordinances aimed at bringing all types of cannabis business to Sparta. Mayor Neill Clark, Deputy Mayor Dean Blumetti, and Councilman Dan Chiariello voted yes to all three. Councilwoman Christine Quinn voted no and Councilman Josh Hertzberg was not at the meeting.

Ordinances 24-16, 24-17, and 24-18 would overturn the township council's decision in 2021 to opt out of New Jersey's cannabis licensing program. The vote in 2021 was 3-1; Chiariello voted to stay in and Hertzberg was not at the meeting.

During the discussion among township council members, Clark laid out several reasons why he thought Sparta would benefit from these ordinances.

Clark said, "There is cannabis [marijuana] being sold in Sparta right now and there is nothing we can do about it."
