US (ME): Ellsworth residents to vote on adult-use shops

In November, Ellsworth residents will decide if they want to allow recreational marijuana stores within the city.

"The question is: 'do you as a citizen want to opt-in to Ellsworth having adult-use cannabis -- formerly called recreational -- these are stores you can walk into without a medical card and purchase cannabis," said Ellsworth City Councilor Jon Stein.

Ellsworth already has some medical marijuana shops in the city, but if voters approve the referendum in November, the city's planning department will begin drafting ordinances and regulations to allow for adult-use cannabis stores -- which will then go to the city council for a final vote.

There will also be a six-month moratorium while these are being drafted. During this part of the process, the city will decide where the stores would go, how many would be allowed in the city and further details like hours of operation.
