US (MI): Planning commission recommends ban on future grow facilities in Coldwater

Coldwater planning commission recommended to the city council banning all future marijuana grow operations after more than two years of study.

Mayor Tom Kramer expressed concern about the odor from the grow operations. "Every community I've talked to that has grow operations has experienced some odor issue," he said.

Another concern was the loss of industrial space with few jobs created by growers. "There didn't seem to be a benefit with few employees and use of large buildings," the mayor explained. Former commissioner Dave Rumsey first suggested the ban in October 2002.

Kramer again requested the change in March 2023, but the planning commission officially did not begin studying the ordinance change until August last year.
