Despite the slow and bumpy roll-out of the state's recreational cannabis industry, Ulster County and a handful of its municipalities managed to see some revenue from the sale of adult-use marijuana in the county.
According to County Executive Jen Metzger's office, the county took in $93,595.06 in revenue between Sept. 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024. The lion's share of that came from cannabis farmers markets — known as grower's showcases — pop-ups and medical marijuana sales.
Of that total, the county realized $23,398.77 in revenue. The city of Kingston and the towns of Rosendale, Hurley, and Gardiner, and the town and village of New Paltz shared the remaining $70,196.29 based on cannabis sales in those municipalities.
According to the state Office of Cannabis Management, a 13% excise tax is levied on all retail cannabis sales in the state. The state keeps 9% of the revenue generated from that tax while 4% is passed on to local municipalities. Counties keep 25% of the local share and the remaining 75% is divvied up among the cities, towns, or villages as a proportion of cannabis sales.
