As the California cannabis industry continues to struggle with contaminated cannabis, the Department of Cannabis Control issued another product recall, last Friday. "The Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) is issuing this notice of mandatory recall for multiple flower products packaged by Higher Ground Holdings, LLC due to the presence of Aspergillus niger and due to inaccurate labeling, that reports more cannabinoid content than the products contain," a press release stated.
This latest recall is the ninth one in September alone. Looking at the record of recalls in 2024, September seems to be the month with the most product recalls.
In an interview with KCBS Radio, LA Times investigative reporter Paige St. John pointed out that the pesticides used in cannabis are the same as those used in general agriculture. However, as she put it, "you don't smoke strawberries." When you vape cannabis, those pesticides not only become concentrated but also enter your lungs and bloodstream, reaching the heart, brain, and kidneys. St. John emphasized the dangers, including cancer, kidney failure, and genetic and neurological harms, saying, "You don't want to inhale those products."
