US (MN): City council discusess how zoning will impact manufacturing spaces

Cannabis zoning codes have been a hot topic at city council and commission meetings lately, with some moving faster than others. St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter signed zoning code changes on Tuesday, while Minneapolis and Bloomington are still examining how they want their codes to look.

Retail dispensaries are the most public-facing way people likely will interact with cannabis businesses once they start popping up, but cultivation and manufacturing operations are also looking to set up shop in the Twin Cities. According to one industry member, there are three things that create an ideal space for a manufacturing space.

During a Wednesday panel discussion at Finance & Commerce's Twin Cities Commercial Real Estate Outlook event, EBCVentures CEO Andrew Boyens said in his experience someone looking to set up a manufacturing shop should seek a location with ample power available, 30,000 to 60,000 square feet of space along with 14 to 16 feet of clearing space.

"Those are the kind of main things you really need," Boyens said. "We're used to working with whatever buildings we can find, but in general as long as they meet those three pieces and you can fit what you need to fit and be able to expand as a business, then you're pretty good."
