Mississippi's medical cannabis program is growing but at a slow pace

The first medical cannabis sales in Mississippi happened in January 2023. Since then, regulations and participation have kept changing.

As the Medical Cannabis Advisory Committee met Thursday to get an overview of the industry, they learned there's an imbalance of sorts.

"We have probably about two to two and a half times more businesses than are needed to sustain the amount of patients we have," said Ken Newburger with the Mississippi Medical Marijuana Association. "When that hits equilibrium, we won't know, because that's in the future. We'll never know what actually happens. But that oversaturation of businesses is going to create a lot of friction and tension in the market."

The data shows there are around 43,000 registered patients with only about 40,000 active. And they're spending around $196 a month on average at dispensaries.
