How do cannabis consumers intend to vote in the U.S. presidential election?

A poll conducted earlier this month shows Donald Trump running ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris among frequent cannabis consumers, raising fresh questions about the effectiveness of the Democrats' pro-cannabis campaign messaging ahead of the party's convention this week.

The flash poll was conducted from Aug. 1 to Aug. 5, approximately two and a half weeks after Trump was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania and before Harris, who became the presumptive Democratic nominee after President Biden dropped out of the race on July 21, selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate.

The new poll follows NuggMD's benchmark election poll of cannabis consumers, conducted in late March. That poll showed President Biden, then the presumptive Democratic nominee, having more support than Trump among the cannabis consumer demographic by a share of 43% to 36%. In the benchmark poll, 16% of respondents expressed support for a different candidate—those voters seem to be coalescing around Trump as the election draws closer.

"Going back to the 2016 election, Trump has shown to have unique durability as a politician, and this poll is no exception. We plan to run election polls several more times before Election Day to explore how the nation's 35m frequent cannabis consumers intend to vote," said Andrew Graham, head of communications at NuggMD.

About the polling
NuggMD conducts cannabis consumer polls using first-party data, including a sample of more than 1m people who use cannabis in state-legal markets.

Roughly half of the sample reports using cannabis mostly or exclusively for medical reasons, while the remainder reports some meaningful degree of recreational use. Bear in mind that there is no single source of truth for what constitutes medical versus recreational use beyond the self-selection of the consumer.

Additionally, a majority of the sample reports daily cannabis consumption. It is therefore advisable to treat our polling as over-indexed on medical users and frequent users. The perceptions and behaviors of our sample is likely to be a leading indicator of how the consumer market for cannabis will trend.
