With installations mainly in the regions of Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria, and Campania, Combimetal Carrera, a company based in Policoro (Matera), specializes in the processing and manufacture of steel greenhouse structures. The company has long offered various greenhouse solutions, both single and multi-bay.
"Every year, we register a 10 percent growth in the demand for agricultural greenhouses," explains Antonio Carrera. "We develop more than 90 hectares per year of traditional structures that, in most cases, house strawberries or orchards, such as stone fruit plants, persimmons, and kiwis. Each request differs according to the customer's preferences: length, single or double wing ridge openings, the addition of plastic film fronts, or the option to include a motorized opening system. We have been designing, building, and installing these structures for 20 years."
Combimetal Carrera greenhouses are entirely hot-dip galvanized, with trusses made from 1 to 11 reinforcements. The hot-dip galvanized round tube arches (27 mm to 60 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm thick) include bracing.
"With the intensification of extreme weather events, we had to improve the stability and strength of the structures. During assembly, we equip the greenhouses with galvanized steel bracing, which is necessary not only to provide the structure with stability and strength in the event of strong gusts of wind but also to ensure that the thermoplastic roofing film is not damaged by severe weather events. The high quality of the materials used, with thickened steel tubes buried at a depth of 50-60 cm using poles with helical ends to ensure better anchorage, allows us to build solid and durable structures, resistant to hail and wind gusts of up to 120 km/h."
However, Combimetal Carrera has faced difficult times, such as the recent negative market trend for ferrous materials like steel, exacerbated by geopolitical and socio-economic challenges. "The global crisis and the shortage of raw materials have led to widespread price increases and a drastic drop in demand of up to 70 percent. Many entrepreneurs have therefore decided to postpone their investments until more stable times. Over the past year, quotations have stabilized, though prices have not returned to pre-COVID-19 levels. In fact, there has been a general price increase of 20 to 30 percent compared to the past—an increase that companies now accept without much consideration."
