Poll shows heavy consumer reliance on legal cannabis markets

A new flash poll conducted by NuggMD has found that 77% of frequent cannabis consumers who live in state-legal markets say they purchase "all" or "most" of their cannabis in licensed, regulated retail locations, signaling widespread consumer adoption of legal cannabis markets. The full poll results are available here.

Additionally, just four percent of respondents to the poll said they "don't know which retailers are licensed versus unlicensed," indicating a very strong consumer awareness of how to shop in legal markets. Just 18% of respondents to the poll indicated that they do not substantially rely on the regulated market for purchasing cannabis.

The poll had 473 respondents, achieving a +/-4.5% margin of error at a 95% confidence level as a representative sample of all cannabis users living in state-legal markets.

"While the adult-use and medical markets are not perfect, this new poll suggests that they are working. By relying on legal marketplaces instead of alternatives that may be more convenient, consumers are doing their part to help the movement fight for sensible drug policy while creating honest, well-paying jobs," said Deb Tharp, head of legal and policy research at NuggMD.

About the polling
NuggMD conducts cannabis consumer polls using first-party data, including a sample of more than 1m people who use cannabis in state-legal markets.

Roughly half of the sample reports using cannabis mostly or exclusively for medical reasons, while the remainder reports some meaningful degree of recreational use. Bear in mind that there is no single source of truth for what constitutes medical versus recreational use beyond the self-selection of the consumer.

Additionally, a majority of the sample reports daily cannabis consumption. "It is therefore advisable to treat our polling as over-indexed on medical users and frequent users. The perceptions and behaviors of our sample is likely to be a leading indicator of how the consumer market for cannabis will trend."
