US (KY): Mayfield City Council passes first reading of ordinance for medical cannabis operations

The Mayfield City Council passed a first reading on Monday for an ordinance amending zoning regulations for the cultivation, dispensing, processing, production, sale and advertising of medical cannabis.

The 2023 Kentucky General Assembly passed Senate Bill 47 legalizing the use of medical cannabis and establishing guidelines for facilities effective Jan. 1, 2025. Mayfield City Ordinance 14-24 will be solidified upon a second reading at the city council meeting in August and passed in accordance with Kentucky state law.

The ordinance outlines zoning requirements for medical cannabis operations, which are allowed within the Highway Commercial District and Central Business District. Prospective facilities cannot be located within 1,000 feet of any elementary school, secondary school or daycare center; within one mile of any other dispensary; or next to any residential structure.

Exterior signage for medical cannabis facilities may only include the business or trade name, location and contact information. Exterior signage cannot include logos, symbols, branded colors or images like cannabis products or smoking. Exterior signs also cannot contain mottos, selling messages or any other non-essential text.
