Colombia's cannabis industry faces serious challenges that threaten its viability. Despite having 57,000 hectares licensed for cultivation, only 26 of these have actually been planted.
This figure shows the significant gap between potential and reality in the sector, which has seen 40% of licensed companies close in the last seven years.
Impact of regulatory delays
Regulatory hurdles are emerging as one of the main obstacles. Analdex has pointed out that the lack of speed in regulatory processes has put many companies on the verge of collapse.
Delays in registration with the Instituto Nacional de Vigilancia de Medicamentos y Alimentos (Invima) and the processes of the Fondo Nacional de Estupefacientes generate an atmosphere of uncertainty, affecting both large and small producers.
