The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is adding a new class focused on cannabis product development to its roster of cannabis education certificates this spring, even as cannabis legalization stalled in the state legislature again last week.
The new Cannabis Product Development and Design Certificate joins four other non-credit-bearing programs through the university's Continuing Education Institute. The school partners with the national cannabis education organization Green Flower on the classes aimed at helping entrepreneurs, interested community members, and students learn more about the cannabis industry.
"Some of the foremost authorities on cannabis product development are teaching you about cannabis extraction, about cannabis formulation, and about cannabis manufacturing, so that whether you want to do it for yourself or you want to do it inside of a company or you want to start a new enterprise, you'll have the guidance to really create these new types of innovative cannabis products," said Green Flower CEO Max Simon.
Cannabis is still illegal in Wisconsin, and last week, a Republican proposal to legalize medical cannabis died in the state legislature after lawmakers couldn't agree on the details. However, the federal 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp products nationwide, opening the door for a growing hemp industry even in states where legal cannabis is still off the table.
