US (SC): Black woman becomes a first in a male dominated growing industry

Hemp farming has only been legal in South Carolina for six years now, and the industry is heavily dominated by men. But that did not stop one Lowcountry woman from breaking the glass ceiling.

"Hemp farming is basically a lower toxin of the cannabis plant in South Carolina," said Sheena Myers, the CEO of Genotype Incorporated. "We're only able to grow up to 0.3, which is CBD, versus anything over that would be THC. So they call that hemp versus cannabis."

Myers is the first Black woman to be a licensed hemp farmer in Charleston County, an industry she became interested in after her baby was born prematurely. Myers wanted to avoid any complications and found herself exploring options outside standard medicine.

"Throughout the process of him being in the NICU for five months- because he was only five months when he was born- when he was in the NICU, we had meetings every morning, and they just had all types of issues that were going on with him and said that he would have to come home on these different medications," Myers said.
