Photo report: MJBizCon 2023

The 2023 edition of MJBizCon has come to an end. Participants traveled to the Las Vegas Convention Center from all over the world. In fact, according to the organizers, international attendance this year bounced back to pre-pandemic levels. Also, this year, cultivation was a major focus of the event, as an entire hall was solely dedicated to the Cultivation Pavilion.

This year's theme of the show was 'Dare to Grow'. "This year has been one heck of a rollercoaster ride for the cannabis industry, but let’s not forget, it’s never been a walk in the park. Challenges are the name of the game, and it’s time to go back to our roots and dare to grow. MJBizCon is where the game-changers, rule breakers, and disruptors unite to connect, innovate and leave their mark on the industry. So, let’s dare to grow together and conquer the challenges ahead," the organizers said.

Yet the show seemed smaller and less crowded than in previous years. The exhibitor hallways were not as big and exhibitors often noted that fewer people stopped by their booths than they are used to. At the same time, we heard exhibitors say that the attendees who did stop by were very interested in their solutions.

As for the market, the North American cannabis market is still going through major challenges. Yet there are some sparks of hope for the industry. This year, Delaware, Minnesota, and Ohio legalized adult-use cannabis. Also this year, the HHS recommended the DEA to reschedule cannabis from Schedule 1 to Schedule 3.

But for the time being, many North American cannabis companies continue to struggle under the competition and price compression. Many exhibitors therefore mentioned diversifying their focus on other horticultural crops or other markets, such as Europe. For producers, optimizing your yield and quality, reducing production costs, and differentiating yourself in the market, are more important than ever.
