But laws holding scientists back

"Ukrainian medical cannabis strains have a wider range of cannabinoids"

In Ukraine, there are strains of cannabis with a THC content not exceeding 0.08%. However, these strains have an increased content of substances that have therapeutic properties, such as CBD and CBG. It is now allowed to cultivate these strains, but the problem lies in the fact that the law prohibits their processing.

This was stated by the head of the hemp breeding and seed department at the Institute of Bast Crops of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, Irina Laiko.

"As breeders, we can quickly propagate the seeds, obtain biomass, process it, and obtain preparations. These can be bio-additives. The problem is that we have insufficient research. We conducted studies in Romania and found that the strains we developed with increased CBD content are better than those currently available in Europe," says Irina Laiko.

She notes that Ukrainian strains have a wider range of cannabinoids, the properties of which have not yet been fully studied at the institute.

Laiko adds that the adoption of a law on medical cannabis will allow scientists to work more extensively, and they will be able to create unique and in-demand strains in a short period.

"We are currently requesting the adoption of this law. For scientists. For producers. The restrictions that exist in the current law hinder the rapid development of entrepreneurship. We understand that it is necessary to control the strains that have an increased THC content. In our strains, its content is within legal limits. So, let's at least allow these strains for cultivation and processing," the scientist adds.
