Medical cannabis agreement between San Marino and Italy

Italy and San Marino are to collaborate in medicinal cannabis. A three-year collaboration has been signed by both countries. The most important novelty in the agreement is the initiation of a Working Table between the two countries to seek the most appropriate forms of collaboration in the cultivation of cannabis for medical use and for the pharmaceutical production of cannabis-based medicines of plant origin.

It has been one of the strategic documents on which the Secretariat of State for Health and Social Security of the Republic of San Marino has been working hard. Last month, on May 17 and 18, the Action Plan for Health Collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Health was signed by the San Marino Secretary of State Roberto Ciavatta and the Italian Minister Roberto Speranza.

Among the other numerous points of the agreement, collaborations on the following themes stand out: greater integration of information systems at the national and regional levels; medicinal products and pharmaceutical raw materials, medical devices, cosmetics and biocides; food supplements and veterinary medicines; scientific research and clinical trials at European level; surveillance surveys for all age groups; and continuing medical education system.

Starting from the Action Plan, technical tables have already been set up, which will deal with the implementation of the various points enshrined in the agreement. "An important confirmation that Italian and San Marino healthcare will be increasingly engaged in a systemic and strategic development," comments the San Marino government.
