It wasn’t that long ago when Brewster was in the lead to become the first town in the area to open a cannabis-based business.
But the town’s two licenses have been stuck on idle for the past two years while cannabis businesses elsewhere have moved forward.
Orleans hosted five forums for prospective retail operators last week, Emerald Grove is scheduled to open May 5 in Eastham, Cape Cod Cannabis has opened in Wellfleet and Provincetown has two retail stores, Curaleaf and B\well.
In Brewster, the Haven Center first applied for a provisional license to operate a medical cannabis dispensary on Route 6A in 2015. Six years later they have their local permits but the pandemic has slowed progress through the state’s Cannabis Control Commission and the planned shop on the Orleans town line, in a former pet supply building, still sits empty.
