A cannabis processor has submitted plans to build a medical marijuana cultivation facility south of Dayton. The proposed building would accommodate 150 jobs.
Marichron Cultivation is looking to construct the facility on 7 undeveloped acres at 1021 Baker Drive in Monroe. The 40,000-square-foot building would be adjacent to Marichron's processing operation, which is under construction now and should be operational in 2021.
Monroe Planning Commission unanimously approved a site plan application Tuesday for the project. Mosaic Construction, a Chicago-based design/build firm, is contracted to build the facility. Pending site plan updates and the submission of building permits, construction should begin in June and be completed by April 2022.
Brad Miller, production manager with Mosaic, told planning commissioners the project will be completed in phases. Marichron plans to staff the facility with 50 employees in the first four months and add 100 more over the following year.
City officials noted that Marichron's name on future documentation for the project will be changed to AWH OH Cultivation. That's because Ascend Wellness Holdings, one of the largest U.S.-based cannabis operators, recently agreed to acquire Marichron Pharma LLC — though Ascend cannot submit a transfer request until Marichron receives a certificate of operation, according to SEC filings.
Marichron is one of 13 companies that received provisional licenses by the Ohio Department of Commerce in 2019 to open medical marijuana processing facilities. Construction on its processing facility in Monroe began late last year.
