Perris to expand cannabis cultivation, distribution sites

Cannabis could soon be able to be legally cultivated and distributed in more of Perris. The Perris City Council voted 4-1 April 13 to allow cultivation and distribution of cannabis on property zoned for commercial use. Councilmember Rita Rogers dissented.

The expansion of where cannabis can be grown and distributed in the city comes in response to businesses being unable to find available property in the city to legally grow and distribute cannabis. The city had previously approved cultivation and distribution in areas zoned for light or general industrial use.

According to a report prepared by city staff, seven out of 12 California cities similar to Perris allowed cultivation and distribution in their commercial zones, including Cathedral City, Long Beach, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Moreno Valley and San Diego, along with unincorporated areas of Riverside County.

The change allowing commercial cannabis growth and distribution in commercially zoned areas would open up two new areas for businesses to use: one near the intersection of Harley Knox and Perris boulevards and one along the south side of Harley Knox at Oleander Avenue.

The issue is scheduled for a second reading at the Tuesday, April 27, Perris City Council meeting.
