CAN (NS): "Our reputation for quality is now creating demand in other parts of Canada”

Breathing Green Solutions (BGS) is a privately funded, Nova Scotia-based producer of premium recreational cannabis. With approximately 1800 m2 of growing operations headquartered in Wentworth, a small, idyllic rural community located in Central Nova Scotia, BGS employs close to 40 people. BGS is one of the first NS companies to obtain a growing license and first to receive a sales/distribution license in October, 2018.

Located on the site of a former Canadian National Defense base, the development of the facility over the past 5 years was led by COO Joe Sanford. The property was transformed into a high-tech facility to accommodate growing areas for clones, vegetative and flowering rooms, drying and curing, as well as packaging and storage.

Focus on high quality
The infrastructure as well as SOPs and product tracking protocols were catered to meet strict Health Canada regulatory requirements.  Designated PurePlant technology, BGS’s growing system includes state-of-the-art LED, metal halide and HPS lighting systems as well as a proprietary hydroponics/soil-less culture system providing exceptional control over all growing conditions.

“We made the decision to focus on high-end, high-quality cannabis products for the sophisticated Nova Scotia market. Our reputation for quality is now creating demand in other parts of Canada”, says Sanford.

“BGS is currently the #1 producer of Nova Scotia cannabis and routinely garners ~10% of the total Nova Scotia market under the SKOSHA brand name”, says Commercial Brand Manager, Liam Thorpe. Demand, interest and a strong reputation for quality and freshness are allowing BGS to explore distribution and partnership agreements into Central and Western Canada.

BGS focuses on three major cannabis strains, including top selling Sativa-dominant Nor’Easter and Lemon Dory, as well as Indica-dominant Mirage. BGS has also introduced Sativa-dominant newcomers such as Strawberry Sky, Tropical Storm and Dartmouth Kush. BGS continues to examine new genetic varieties such as Indica-dominant and hybrid strains to provide innovative offerings to the consumer.

High efficiency, low production costs
Since legalization in Canada in October of 2018, BGS has focused on understanding the cannabis market, product quality and production efficiency. With top-notch employees, automated irrigation and supplemental CO2 injection, BGS is increasing product quality and production efficiency, while decreasing production costs per unit volume. Worker safety, progressive excellence and improvement are at the core of BGS decision-making. BGS has also adjusted curing practices for strain-specific effects to preserve cannabinoid and terpene content, to ensure the best consumer experience possible.

Moreover, BGS is working with the university and college research community to help develop cannabis course material, and identify areas to improve on plant agronomy, plant health and nutrition, Integrated Pest Management, environmental control, and product chemistries. “The newness of the legalized cannabis industry means plenty of opportunity for industry-led, academic-based research”, says Chief Science Officer, Dr. Jeff Norrie.

With cannabis products having controlled distribution through the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission, BGS works closely with the NSLC to educate and inform budtenders and consumers on responsible cannabis use practices as well as growing methods and user experience. BGS is now examining the production of other value-added products (e.g. oils, derivatives) as well as looking to be a supplier of resources for the edibles market through collaboration with outside partners.

“BGS strives to be a leader in the boutique cannabis market by emphasizing worker safety and wellness within a positive corporate culture, while producing market-leading product quality and freshness”, says BGS Marketing Manager, Brittney Sanford.

BGS President, Savior Joseph reminds us that “the cannabis industry is going through lots of changes at the moment. Our business will be powered by our reputation for freshness and quality. This will allow us to remain leaders in the boutique cannabis sector in Atlantic Canada and beyond.”
