The Netherlands has a long history in the horticulture industry. The Dutch boast great expertise when it comes to growing plants in both greenhouses and indoor farms. When the cultivation of medical cannabis was legalized, it was inevitable that growers started looking to the “greenhouse capital of the world” for answers. It is this history and knowledge that Inhuis brings to the industry.
The Dutch Heritage
Ron Berkhout, Founding Partner of Inhuis, brings his Dutch heritage, and his hands-on experience growing up in the traditional horticulture industry, to the cannabis industry. Ron worked for many years alongside his father, for some of the top greenhouse equipment companies. Through this experience he gained knowledge about different solutions and systems available for the horticulture industry, and when the shift to cannabis came, he helped bridge the gap between traditional and cannabis markets. “Many growers transitioned from small-scale black-market operations to large scale commercial growing facilities. A number of them were unaware of the differences between these two, and the majority of them did not have any horticulture background. This is exactly where Inhuis and our expertise come into play” Ron says.
Designing an efficient facility
Efficiency is key in a cannabis operation, not just from a construction and operating perspective. Growers often experience difficulties when designing and building a grow facility, because there are so many different working parts, and suppliers to consider, and varying requirements depending where they are building. “This eventually leads to construction problems, as none of these suppliers are connected”, Ron explains. This is where Inhuis comes in. “There was a big opening for providing a one-stop shop. Instead of a client looking for lighting, and benching and so on, and wasting a lot of time in the process. With Inhuis we do everything for our clients”, he says.
The team with Inhuis
Inhuis are full turnkey solutions providers for companies looking to build facilities, whether it is greenhouse, indoors or outdoors. Inhuis connects all the top suppliers in the industry, from greenhouse, lighting, benching, irrigation, controls, automation, engineers, licencing and SOP experts, business plan developers, architects, and even pest management, to take the stress off the client and “provide what we think is the best option for a grower to be successful – every solution of ours is custom-made”.
The team at Inhuis specialize in designing facilities that are efficient, “have good flow and are cheap to operate” Ron says. Their facility designs are based on EUGMP standards, and traditional horticulture efficiency practices. “The Westland, a region in the Netherlands, is full of greenhouses and there is so much automation,” Ron remarks. “If you walk into one of these Dutch greenhouses, you will probably find only 6 or 7 people working in there – everything is automated. This because labor is a big factor, as it is an ongoing cost. Therefore, it is crucial to know that there is tech out there that reduces labor. This aspect is going to be very important in the cannabis industry, especially in Canada.”
It is about finding a good fit
“We spend a lot of time with our clients because we want them to be successful,” he points out. Inhuis treats clients like family, getting to know them, so they can get a feel for what the clients want and need. “We build relationships with our clients, follow up on them, and help them to keep improving their operations. We believe that you treat people the way you want to be treated.”
Inhuis not only helps growers with the design and construction of a compliant facility. They can also help their clients find the right people for their operation. “It is always about finding a good fit, and we help them find the right person. Inhuis sets clients up for success and efficiency, the traditional way."
