Danish firm offers fully automated cannabis production

Cannabis production is the talk of the horticultural industry. Around the world, licenses are being issued to growers who are trying to get a foot into the new world of medicinal cannabis. However, as it is produced for medicinal purposes, the cannabis plants must be grown and handled in contamination-free environments.

Danish company Viemose DGS are the first to develop a fully automated Moving Gutter System (MGS) specially made for medicinal cannabis production. The company has been in the greenhouse industry for more than 70 years and has been producing Moving Gutter Systems for more than 25 years. Now, they have developed their MGS further, making the growing area completely isolated and fully automated, which ensures the cleanliness needed for medicinal cannabis. The growers will furthermore benefit from all the other advantages of the normal MGS, which includes

  • Reduced labour costs and working time
  • Minimised energy and water consumption
  • Minimised CO2 emissions
  • Significantly reduced production costs
  • Minimised use of fertilizer
  • No pesticides
  • Controlled use of plastic
  • Highest plant quality
  • Plants that are naturally more resistant to pests
  • Increased profitability

The process is simple. After propagation, the cannabis plants are placed on a conveyor belt and moved to an isolated area where people have no access. Here, the plants are automatically placed in gutters, where they will be perfectly watered, fertilized and have the optimal amount of space until they are fully grown. The plants are then harvested automatically and placed on a conveyor belt that takes them out of the isolated area.

According to Steen Beyer, Sales Manager at Viemose DGS, the newly developed system came about very naturally; “We are committed to finding the optimal solutions for our customers. When they came to us and asked about cannabis production, of course we had to create a system that meets the needs of a modern medicinal cannabis grower.”
