Recent increases in sole-source production of high value crops demands an increased understanding of light spectrum on plant morphology in order to optimize propagation, growth, and yield of plants. Traditionally, indoor cannabis production has primarily used High Pressure Sodium, or HPS, however the recent introduction of LED lighting has allowed for spectral control coupled with increased energy efficiency.
This new technology has the potential to increase quality while decreasing overhead costs. Characterizing plant morphological changes and secondary metabolite production under different light sources will provide a means to improve growth strategies. In this study the different light spectrum provided by the LED results in a plant with an altered cannabinoid profile. In many cases the THCA content is greater than or equal under LED lighting.
